The Contract | The Overcomers Series

An excerpt from Pastor Steve Gallagher’s teaching, “The Contract”

As I thought about the contract that we enter into with the Lord, I couldn't help but think of the marital contract. A marriage is supposed to be two people who finally find the person that they have dreamed about all their lives and they are now ready to completely devote themselves to that other person with all their hearts; and this is a powerful metaphor throughout Scripture of God marrying His people. This metaphor is in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. In fact, I believe that this marriage between God and His people is what the Bible is all about.

Why are we even on the earth? Why is there an Earth at all? Why did it unfold the way that it unfolded? Why did there have to be sin? Why did there have to be idolatry, pride, and all the stuff that we deal with? Why does the devil have to be let loose upon us? It's because God the Father was procuring for Himself a bride who would prove her devotedness to her husband, Jesus. That’s what it is all about.

The entire Bible comes to a head in Revelation, chapter 19, when Jesus finally marries His bride and then lives happily ever after, the one time you can actually say that in truth. He lives happily ever after with His bride.

There's a verse in the New Testament that tells us that it was actually Jesus in the wilderness with the nation of Israel. It was Jesus Christ that was there leading them throughout the wilderness and interacting with them. You can easily recite the Shema as “You shall love Jesus Christ with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.” Of course we love the Father and we love the Holy Spirit. I'm not trying to disparage them. I'm showing us that God the Father was procuring a bride for His son.

As I consider this reality, I picture Jesus standing on the eastern shore of the Jordan River at an altar - it's both an altar and a narrow gate - and His bride is coming to Him and they are going to exchange their marital vows together to enter into a marital contract. What an amazing thing!
