What Are Your Thoughts on 'Radical Amputation'?
What are your thoughts on 'radical amputation'?
I assume that you are referring to the words of Jesus:
“I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.” (Matthew 5:28-30)
I think we will all agree that Jesus is not telling people to begin hacking on their bodies! That would be completely out of character for the One who constantly went about healing people.
However, I think that what He is saying is that when something as insidious as sexual lust grips your heart or masturbation grips your life, you better be prepared to sever those things out of your life that are allowing the sin to remain in place. For me, the Lord showed me very clearly 19 years ago that I had to get rid of my television set because it was exerting a strong, ungodly influence upon my life. That is an example of what I would call “radical amputation.” It amazes me, though, how little concern lust-filled Christian men seem to have over the serious implication of Jesus’ words.
