Why the 2019 Annual Conference Will Be Life-Changing

‘Pure Life Ministries' 2019 Annual Conference is coming up soon! Steve Gallagher, the founder and president, gives his perspective on this year's Conference and explains how this powerful weekend will impact anyone who attends.

Pastor Steve, we're not far away from Pure Life Ministries' 2019 Annual Conference, which takes place on April 26-27 in Florence, KY! You've said that this year's theme, "Through Many Dangers, Toils and Snares," is connected to John Bunyan's book The Pilgrim's Progress. Can you explain that?

Yeah, I wonder if, when John Newton wrote that phrase in Amazing Grace that says, "Through many dangers, toils and snares”…if he hadn't been affected by The Pilgrim's Progress. It just kind of has that same feel to it. But life is definitely a journey, and in this journey we are going to face different sorts of things. But that’s especially true in the last days—days of such intense warfare that we are in today. How much more real are those dangers, toils and snares that we will be facing! But God is there for us, and God will take us through victoriously. So it's not like I'm despairing over it; I'm excited, in a sense, because I know what the Lord can do.

Is this Conference just for people who've been involved in or impacted by sexual sin?

Well, it is especially good for families who are dealing with sexual sin issues...for a couple of different reasons. One reason is a lot of people want to know what they're going to get in their interactions with Pure Life Ministries. Maybe they're checking us out to see if they can really get the help they're looking for. So that's one thing. But also, when it comes to getting a breakthrough with your spiritual life—the Conference is the place for that to happen! We have seen powerful transformations happen at the Conference down through the years. So I know what God can do when someone is in the right place spiritually and ready for it. The Lord will come through and meet them there. But really, the truth is that any believer is only going to be blessed at the Conference. I know that sounds like something you'd expect me to say, but I'm telling you: sitting in the presence of God for two days...you just never know what is going to happen. Whether people are in sexual sin or not, God is there at the Conference, and being in his presence is life-changing.

How does this year's Conference theme, "Through Many Dangers, Toils and Snares," connect to the needs of Christian people in today's world?

We do live in a different world, in some ways, than the world of godly men like John Bunyan and John Newton. Our lives are so much easier than theirs were back then. But on the other side, our temptations are much greater. Those men didn't have to deal with television, pornography, the Internet or the fast-paced, stress-filled lifestyle that we all live. But then again, they didn't have a lot of the comforts and safety things that we have. So it is a different realm. But the same basic temptations, trials and problems that believers face in this world are there; they've just amped up in our day and age.

Another difference between our lives in America today and what Christians of the past faced was that we don't really face a lot of persecution right now. But based on what you're seeing in current events, could we possibly see more persecution ahead?

Well, if you follow the trajectory of our political system—in Europe and in the United States—it's not hard to see that we are moving increasingly into godless socialism. We've had a reprieve with President Trump, but it's temporary. I don't know if Trump will be reelected, but at some point he will leave office. And then what? Everything is in God's hands; the timing is in His hands. So, I don't know when things are going to get more difficult for us, but to me, it's just obvious where we're headed as a nation. So I know that, for myself, every opportunity that I can lay hold of to be in the presence of God and to allow him to do one of those special works in my heart...I want to get it! I want to get all of it while I can! Because we have no guarantees for the future, and our 2019 Annual Conference and other events like it are the kinds of things you don't want to miss while you still have the opportunity.

Let's face it: people are busy. There's so much competing for people's time. Since that's true, why do you feel it's important for people to take the time to come to our Conference?

We are spiritual beings. And when I look over my past thirty or forty years with the Lord, I can pinpoint different milestone experiences with God that made me the man that I am today. It wasn't just that I obeyed God, and it wasn't just reading the Bible. It was those certain epochal times when I met with God; those are the things that were life-changing and made me who I am today. That's why the Conference is important. That's why we, as the staff of Pure Life Ministries, pray and fast and seek God for months before the Conference. And that's why people come. Those who come are going to be sitting in God's presence, and they're going to receive something that they would not receive if they were staying at home.
